The 1w Caspo with the pale culmen and bill tip, seen yesterday, showed closer today. It has a very prominent neck 'shawl' contrasting with the white head.
This bird behaved aggressively towards other Gulls.
The 2w Iceland Gull only showed distantly today but it stands out.
The ad Med has some yellow staining on the inner secondaries of it's right wing.
You can see the darker outer webs to the outer primaries on this Kumlien's Iceland Gull
One of the things to look for on Kumlien's is the outer primaries being darker than the inner wing, on glaucoides they're paler.
Kumlien's Gull over the tip.
An interesting Herring Gull. It was distant on the deck but had paleish primaries with paler fringes. In flight the wings had a uniform look. Is this indicative of a northern bird ?

Just as your gull numbers have increased, ours at Holmethorpe have dropped dramatically, Johnny. We've gone from 206 Great Black-backeds on New Year's day down to 28 today.
ReplyDeleteOur highest Greater Black-backed count is 175 Graham, although it's hard to see em all, scattered all over the farm.
