RINGED CASPIAN GULL

Following about three weeks of white-winger fest but no Caspos, a first winter turned up yesterday and a different first winter today. Today's bird was concealed amongst other Gulls at first but I could see it didn't have the washed out coverts of yesterday's bird. When it came out into the open I noticed it had a darvic ring. The colour of the ring and code showed that it had been ringed by the North Thames Gull Group http://www.ntgg.org.uk/ , probably at Pitsea or Rainham. Being a first winter, it was probably ringed not that long ago and with little history yet but I've notified the ringers. Wonder where else it'll be seen ? Later on four Dunlin dropped in. Weather related ?

* News from the North Thames Gull Group. The Caspo was ringed at Rainham 17/12/11 and seen there one day before we had it ! Now why couldn't the putative Slaty-backed Gull have payed us a visit ?!

The 1w Caspo with ring. Quite a lot of barring on the greater coverts of this bird.

The Dunlin appeared out of nowhere, then moved off again after a short while.

  1. Very nice shots, looks obvious when you see it. I keep hoping of finding one at Reculver. The search goes on.
